The story is pretty straightforward when it comes to the Bourne Identity, but it’s the screenplay and the performances of Matt Demon and his co-stars which have got the movie live and kicking. Based on Robert Ludlum’s spy trilogy novel- Jason Bourne, the Bourne identity was one of the best flicks of this series.

The first scene of the movie sets the mood and the pace at which the rest of it flows. Matt Demon is found floating in Dark Ocean by some Italian fishermen, to whose surprise Demon is still alive. The audience is further engrossed when they find out that the man has two bullet injuries in the back and a Swiss account number. With that backdrop, the audience finds out that the man has no idea of who he was and what he was doing in the middle of the ocean. On reaching his Swiss Bank account, he finds out that his name is probably Jason Bourne and that he has some money, few guns and around a dozen passports with different identities in his bank locker. He also figures out that someone is after his life and trying to kill him.

The real twist to the story comes when the audience (but not Bourne) comes to know that Bourne actually is a CIA agent, who had failed to assassin an African leader living in exile. This was, unfortunately his last mission that he had failed to execute, leading to embarrassment for the CIA and his mentor- Chris Cooper. The audience then realize that Bourne is just another target of his own legacy, and the rest of the movie revolves around his journey to find who he is, what he was doing in the ocean and why are some people trying to kill him. Although, the movie get obvious at times, yet this action packed spy flick is one of its kind and therefore, is a must watch.

The recruit was one of those movies where El Pacino was the only major factor in accumulating some business. The movie is criticized for having an obvious and predictable storyline and the only reason why the movie was some sort of success was because of its start-studded cast consisting of El Pacino and Colin Farrell (who had shot to stardom in 2000).

Directed by Roger Donaldstone, the movie revolves around the story of James Clayton (played by Farrell, who is an MIT graduate working as a bartender, who gets recruited by the CIA. Clayton has had a history of someone who has been obsessed by the sudden disappearance and later the death of his father under mysterious circumstances. This guy, therefore, proves to be the perfect mark for a recruit.

This answer seeking technocrat is picked up by Walter Burke (played by El Pacino) as part of a team which is supposed to handle a mission concerned with a supercharged computer virus capable of causing large-scale corruption of data worldwide. Farrell’s otherwise untapped talent has been explored in this movie when he, along with his fellow recruit Layla (played by Bridget Moyahnan), are trained intensively at the “farm”.

Although the story line of the movie is pretty obvious, but Pacino’s immaculate style and the way with which he circumlocutes lectures and crunch situations does add a bit of suspense to the story, but on the whole, the movie and the storyline in general, is pretty normal and standard.

The addition of the cliché “nothing is as it seems” has been deliberately made, so to speak, in order to increase the level of involvement of the audience. This has not only heightened the obviousness of the plot but also undermined character development at some vital places. On the whole, the movie has nothing new to the genre it deals with except for a scintillating (yet tired) performance by El Pacino coupled with the fervor of Colin Farrell.

Pierce Brosnan had announced his arrival on the Bond arena with his commendable performance in this thrilling Bond blockbuster. The movie is just slightly better that the previous Bond movies, which is a reason big enough to make it a must watch flick. The movie has ever ingredient that a Bond movie must and Pierce Brosnan couldn’t have found a better break to showcase hi talent in the tuxedo. The movie is centered on the Cold war era, with two beautiful women- one evil and the other good and the usual Bond characters in the movie- making it a crisp movie to watch.

Brosnan looks immaculate in the movie and while Connery still remains the best Bond ever, Brosnan seems to fit in quite perfectly and seems in control of the situation for most part of the movie. From extravagant action scenes and cool gadgets to pulling those witty one-liners with a straight face, Brosnan definitely displays his ability to play the new Bond quite well in the movie. Everything in the movie speaks volumes about the glamour and the charisma associated with a Bond movie and the show of glitterati is quite evident in the official title track of the movie, sung by Tina Turner to the lyrics of Bono and Edge of the U2 fame.

This Bond flick has also been termed as one of the most entertaining Bond movies ever to be made, with the explosive stunts scenes in the beginning followed by the subtle and out of the norm credits after that, the movie does incorporate a new sense of belonging to the era of computer hackers (’95, when it was released) and mobile telephony. Directed by Marin Campbell and possessing a skillfully crafted storyline, the GoldenEye is definitely one of the best entertainers of all time.

Anyone who goes to watch this movie will be faced with a loud and rather well executed adventure of sorts, showcasing Harry (being played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) as the perfect undercover cop, full of confidence and self belief. The role is rather well executed by Arnold and he fits is quite naturally. The special effects of this otherwise low budget film are exceptional considering the small budget set aside for the movie. Nothing looks made up- adding to the durability and credibility of the storyline.

The movie has a number of humorous twists written all over the place. James Cameron has directed the movie based upon the classic French comedy La Totale. Harry has a wife and a daughter and unfortunately, both of them are unaware of Harry’s actual profession (of being a secret agent). In this backdrop, Harry overhears his wife once and gets to know that she is having an affair with a car salesman. The movie starts to build on a subtle story line from this point on. The moment Harry realizes that his wife might be having an affair with some cheesy car salesman, his outward demeanor changes from that of a confident undercover agent to someone who is sly and has no confidence over himself- the way Arnold carries these scenes off is an amusing thing in itself.

The movie is a trademark Cameron thriller, with subtle and loud action scenes coupled with a pinch of humor. The movie does lack substance at times, especially when it comes to living up to its ‘name’. As a first impression, ‘true lies’ suggests an action packed storyline revolving around some international trade racket of sorts, but one is amused to find that the movie is actually about how and undercover agent suspects her wife and consequently takes measures to check her loyalty towards him.

John Frankenheimer has directed a wonderful storyline with Ronin. Portrayed in the post world war era, where personal allegiance to a country came second to money and power, the movie is based on the backdrop of a deal being carried out between an Irish lady and six men specializing in explosives, theft, carrying out covert operations etc. Initially, all goes well between these six men- Robert de Neiro, Jean Reno and four others- but later mistrust and suspicion creeps in, giving the movie more twists than you would have anticipated.

Robert de Neiro executes the lead role rather well, and this high-tech movie flows smoothly through his character, giving it a totally no-tech feel. The area where the movie gains credibility of the audience is in the usage of equipment, which unlike most Bond films and other movies, is pretty real yet high-tech. The use of high-end bullet proof vests, night vision goggles, and remote controlled bombs and GPS systems adds a sense of credibility to the whole sequence of events in the movie. Most of these are common devices and therefore, their usage doesn’t appear “out of the world” to the audience.

The helping cast also does the work pretty well and no member of the movie seems to have been added just for the sake of it. Every character seems to have a well defined role.

The story of six people fighting for the “briefcase” (whose ingredients remain a mystery till the very end) takes a turn for the worst when Reno and De Neiro figure out that they are being duped. They team up and develop a bond of inter-dependence with each other- giving the movie a new direction towards the climax. Reno’s role is that of a thorough professional while De Neiro does the plotting for most part of the movie- making both of them a classic duo in the film. The movie therefore, is definitely worth the money.

Although the movie is not perfect in all respects, yet it has some action packed sequences, some emotional scenes and witty one-liners- enough to make the movie a one-time watch at least. There are mixed reactions when people comment personally about this movie- some feel that this is the worst mission film ever made, while some feel that it is one of the classics to have been launched by Abram. As far as my own opinion goes, this movie is very similar to some of the Bond films, but has a more rigid story line and the presences of Tom Cruise and Hoffman make it a short term success at least. It is definitely not one of those movies that you would remember for ages, but it is not one of those movies as well which you can’t bear for more than half an hour! It is a mixed bag and you would realize precisely this after you are done with the movie.

On the whole, the movie has been directed rather dully by Abram and he hasn’t allowed for scenes shot from a longer distance. Most of the scenes are shot at from a close range and this makes the movie a bit monotonous. Having said that, you should be rest assured that the movie is a hard-core spy movie, with minimal dialogues in the middle. Dialogues are few, but each and every word spoken in the movie is elementary to the story and the character- definitely, a movie relying more on actions than on words!

Some of the most common and amusing “gadgets” have been borrowed from the previous versions of the mission series. These include those funny latex masks, collar mics and similar stuff. All this coupled with some great action scenes and Tom Cruise’s ability to engross an audience make it a must watch.

This is one movie which served as the much waited flick for a large part of the Hollywood audience. Bond movie lovers were long awaiting a fresh change in the regular, out of the world sequences which had become an integral part of Bond movies, and Daniel Craig delivered exactly that to the audience.

Directed by Martin Campbell, this Bond flick definitely has more explosions and ammo being used that a large number of other Bond flicks in the history of Bond cinema. All this said, none of the scenes seem to be over-done and over-acted by Daniel Craig- everything has flown naturally and it appears that the Tuxedo was meant for Daniel Craig who looked the ‘Perfect Bond’.

The characters and the story line of this particular Bond film have been well crafted and the movie has stood out as not being full of one-liners and non-directional action sequences; rather, the movie seems to flow through a well directed story line, giving shape to its characters at many important phases of the storyline. The character seems to come to life when the demeanor with which Daniel Craig, the ‘untiring’ bond, executed vital sequences of the movie, giving a feel that the character is lethal, seductive, grim, intelligent, but human at the same time.

Some parts of the movies do seem somewhat unwanted and un-called for, though. The poker fight, for instance, seems to have been added just to add a bit of glitterati and action to the otherwise boring mid section of the movie. There are some minor edition errors also in the movie (like the scene where Bond leaves his room and finds his compatriot unconscious in the room when he returns after hours pf playing poker at the Casino), but on the whole, this is one of those Bond flicks which many people, especially Bond fans, had been waiting for in a long time.

Directed by Sydney Pollack, Three days of the Condor was one of its time’s most tense and intriguing suspense flicks. This movie was a well made and thought out thriller revolving around a conspiracy theory, and the best thing that worked out for this movie back then (when it was launched), is that the incident of Watershed had just passed and it led to a number of people believing in the authenticity of this movie’s storyline.

This movie, starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway, was one of the first movies featuring Hollywood actors as plotters, assassins and federal agents involved in murders. The conspiracies revolving around federal murders had gained some air during those days and this movie was well timed for the storyline it portrayed.

Redford, the target in this movie, is portrayed as a high school kid, dressed up in tweeds and snickers. He is shown as obscurely working for the American Literary Historical Society, which is a front of the CIA. The strings between the society and the CIA are not very clearly shown in the movie, but what one infers out as a first impression is that they do some research with foreign books and computerize them in order to decipher certain hidden codes and messages.

While working on his job, all the other members of his team are shot dead while luckily, he was out having lunch. As the story unfolds, Redford, with the assistance of Faye Dunaway (Kathy), is able to figure out that the assassination of his colleagues had something to do wit the personal motives of the CIA. The role gets serious as this realization falls upon Dunaway, after which he make an effort to unearth the plot completely. The results of his expedition are surprising, intriguing and a bit expected- definitely a classic to watch.

This movie is an account of the infamous assassination of a team of 11 Israeli athletes at the hands of Palestinian terrorists in 1972. Out on Universal, this Steven Spielberg saga is as near to reality as one can get- portraying both the Israeli as well as the Palestinian side of the story neutrally. Steven Spielberg has wisely chosen to not support a group or faction in this movie (contrary to other popular ‘terrorism’ based movies); rather, he has successfully brought out the consequences that can be caused due to unabated hatred and political turmoil in a region. The story line is quite organic and neutral and becomes really difficult for the end user to decide which side is right or wrong in the end.

Eric Banta is portrayed as a Mossad agent, who had to leave his pregnant wife for an unknown mission. He is portrayed as being on a panel of five agents which the then Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir had appointed to seek revenge and kill all those responsible for the gruesome attack.

The movie begins with the assassination of the team and then Avner’s (Eric Banta’s role) character realizing the validity of the actions he was supposed to do. The agents appointed by Mossad are kept in constant denial of the actual reasons for their actions and they are just asked to follow orders lamely, which leads Avner to reconsider his stand and loyalty towards Israel in general and Mossad in particular.

So what is it that actually makes this movie stand apart? Is it the story line? Is it the casting? Actually, apart from casting and a great story line, the real reason as to why the movie is a great watch is that it brings out the humane side of both the terrorists as well as the Israeli agents.

Termed as a “serious minded” entertainer, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) had lived up to its Prequel- The Bourne Identity (2002). The movie avoids out of the world stunts and not-called-for jokes; rather it focuses on the story line and some hardcore action which looks and sounds real. Definitely, this movie is for grown ups who are looking for some serious fun.

This movie is set up in India for the most part of it, where Jason Bourne lives with his Girlfriend Marie under fake identity. The movie starts slow, but picks up the pace with the introduction of a suspicious character on the lookout for Bourne, with a picture of his with him. The jittery camera movement can be annoying and confusing at the same time but it is this camerawork only which brings out the punch in the final scenes of the movie. There are very few movies that I have come across as having such a crisp and intriguing end.

The sequence of events ad scenes through which the movie flows can be a bit confusing to the impatient viewer, but my suggestion for such viewers is to watch the movie till the end in one sitting and be patient while you are browsing through the scenes- the puzzle starts coming together towards the end in a rather abrupt way- so just wait and watch as the story unfolds before you.

In all, Paul Greengrass, the director of the movie has allowed for adequate character development and also managed to keep the pace of the movie moderate, at the same time. The details of the location and actually going to the locations and shooting there without fake sets has added to the genuineness of the movie and added a trans-national flavor to the movie- making it one of the biggest hits of the decade.
